Godawari Power & Ispat Limited (GPIL), a prominent player in India’s integrated steel and power industry, has resumed iron ore mining operations at its Boria Tibu Iron Ore Mines in Rajnandgaon district, Chhattisgarh. This strategic development marks a critical step in enhancing the company’s raw material security and supporting its in-house steel production capacity.

The resumption of operations comes after GPIL received approval for an updated mining plan from the Indian Bureau of Mines, under the Ministry of Mines, Government of India. The new mining plan allows for continuous operations at the site for the next five years, valid through March 31, 2030.

Key Milestone in Raw Material Security

Mining operations at Boria Tibu had been temporarily halted on April 1, 2025, due to the expiry of the previously approved plan. The new clearance paves the way for uninterrupted iron ore production, a critical raw material in steel manufacturing.

“This resumption strengthens our backward integration and ensures long-term self-sufficiency in raw material sourcing, thereby optimizing production costs and efficiency,” stated a company spokesperson.

The reopening of the mines aligns with GPIL’s commitment to maintaining control over its supply chain and reducing dependence on third-party ore suppliers—an important advantage in volatile commodity markets.

Strategic Benefits for GPIL’s Steel Manufacturing Operations

Iron ore mined at the Boria Tibu facility will feed directly into GPIL’s integrated steel plant, enhancing operational efficiency, improving cost management, and ensuring consistent quality of input materials. This move is expected to positively impact GPIL’s bottom line and bolster its competitiveness in both domestic and international steel markets.
