On June 30, 2025, Reliance Infrastructure Limited, through its subsidiary Reliance Defence Limited, announced a major strategic partnership with Coastal Mechanics Inc. (CMI), a U.S. Department of Defense-authorized contractor. This collaboration aims to jointly address India’s growing Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) and upgrade opportunities in the defence sector, estimated to be worth ₹20,000 crore.

Broad Scope of Operations Across Platforms

The partnership will provide comprehensive lifecycle support, MRO, and upgrade solutions for key Indian military platforms. This includes servicing over 100 Jaguar fighter aircraft, 100+ MiG-29 fighter jets, Apache attack helicopters, L-70 air defence guns, and various legacy systems. The deal aligns with India’s evolving defence strategy which emphasizes asset life extension and performance-based logistics over outright replacement.

Joint Venture to Boost Defence Manufacturing

To facilitate this initiative, Reliance Defence and Coastal Mechanics will establish a Joint Venture (JV) at MIHAN (Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur) in Maharashtra. The JV will cater to both domestic and export markets, offering end-to-end MRO and upgrade solutions for air and land-based defence systems. This venture will also bring Coastal Mechanics’ advanced capabilities, including manufacturing, reverse engineering, and repair services, into India’s growing aerospace and defence ecosystem.

Aligning with Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India

This strategic collaboration underscores Reliance Defence’s commitment to the Indian government’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ vision. By leveraging global technologies and domestic expertise, the partnership aims to significantly reduce India’s dependency on defence imports and promote indigenous capabilities in high-end aerospace manufacturing.

About the Companies

Coastal Mechanics, founded in 1975, has over four decades of experience supplying critical components to the U.S. Army and Air Force. The company holds essential U.S. defence certifications and has access to classified technical data, making it a valuable partner for high-precision projects.

Reliance Infrastructure Limited, a flagship of the Reliance Group, is active in energy, infrastructure, and defence sectors. Its defence arm, Reliance Defence, is targeting to become one of India’s top three defence exporters. The Reliance Group boasts a strong financial position with a net worth and turnover of ₹33,000 crore each, and a shareholder base exceeding 4 million.

This landmark partnership marks a significant step toward building a robust, self-reliant defence MRO ecosystem in India and positions Reliance Defence as a frontrunner in the sector’s future growth.
