In a significant development, Godawari Power & Ispat Limited (GPIL) has secured a key approval from the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) for its High Tensile (HT) steel billets. These billets, manufactured in compliance with IS 14650 standards, have been officially certified by PGCIL as suitable for use in galvanized fabricated steel structures required in transmission projects. The approval is valid for one year, from July 2, 2025, to July 1, 2026.
Boost to In-House Manufacturing Capabilities
While GPIL had earlier received a similar approval from PGCIL in February 2025, the latest certification solidifies the company’s eligibility to supply the full range of HT steel billets to manufacturers of galvanized steel structures. This recognition is a testament to GPIL’s high-quality production, now on par with major steelmakers in India. The approval will enable GPIL to internally source HT billets for its own production of galvanized structures, thus reducing dependence on high-cost external suppliers.
Business Expansion and Profitability Outlook
Previously, GPIL’s ability to offer a complete product range for PGCIL transmission projects was constrained due to the high cost of procuring HT billets from the market. With this new in-house capability, the company can now produce and supply a full spectrum of galvanized steel structures cost-effectively. This shift is expected to significantly enhance both the volume and profitability of GPIL’s business related to PGCIL and similar infrastructure projects.
A Unique Position in the Indian Steel Market
GPIL holds a distinctive place in the Indian steel manufacturing landscape. It is the only company in India that manages the full value chain—from processing iron ore to producing finished galvanized steel structures. This vertical integration ensures better quality control, cost efficiency, and greater responsiveness to market demands.
The PGCIL approval marks a major turning point for GPIL, setting the stage for expanded operations and improved margins. With strong product quality and end-to-end production capabilities, GPIL is well-positioned to capture a larger share of India’s growing infrastructure sector, especially in power transmission.
This development not only affirms the company’s technological strength but also enhances its strategic standing in the competitive steel industry.
